Richard Strauss (1864-1949) originally wrote this work for solo piano and orchestra under the title Scherzo in D minor in 1886 for conductor and pianist Hans von Bülow, a large influence on Strauss' career. Von Bülow, however, consider the work a complicated piece of nonsense and wanted nothing to do it. Discouraged, Strauss set the work aside until 1889, when he met Scottish pianist Eugen d'Albert, who liked it while also suggesting some changes. With a new title, Burleske, and a dedication to d'Albert, the work was premiered on June 21st, 1890 in Eisenach at the Tonkünstlerfest with d'Albert at the piano and Strauss conducting. Despite this, Strauss remained convinced that the work lacked merit and refused to have the work published until 1894, although it eventually became one of his favorite works. Strauss never gave the work an opus number, but many consider it to be Op. 11, which is actually assigned to his Horn Concerto No. 1 in E-flat. Tirol: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra by Philip Glass was premiered at the Klanspuren Festival in Tirol, Austria and written with the support of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and the Tirol Tourish Board. Glass studied sound documents and sheet music of Tyrolese folk-music, using this source material directly as the basis for the concerto.

Harri Wessman (b. 1949) is interested in all aspects of music that may be expressive, without in any way ignoring the possibilities of melody. He himself describes his harmonic method as a kind of contrapuntally treated jazz harmony. During recent years pedagogic music has become a more and more central area in his output with an emphasis on creating repertoire for budding musicians, from beginners to young professionals. I don't write children's music. Stylistically I write in the same way as for professionals; technically, the pieces just have to be easier to play. Concertino No. 2 for piano and chamber orchestra was commissioned by a Finnish press house Yhtyneet Kuvalehdet Oy for the inauguration of their new office building in 1987. According to the original plan the concertino was to be used in an advertising film of the company. A melody with wide arch which can be heard in the midpoint of the piece, first played by the orchestra and then repeated with the piano, was intended to be the theme song of the film. The 10 minutes duration and small orchestra (flute, oboe, clarinet and strings) makes this one movement piece suitable also for young orchestra players.

The Rachmaninoff Critical Edition is a major Moscow-based publishing project, based on original manuscripts that will bring a new level of scholarship to the works of this ever-popular composer. A piano version of an orchestral suite written whilst Rachmaninoff was a conservatoire student. Long considered lost, this work has only recently been discovered in the Glinka Museum archives.

Kalevi Aho's Piano Concerto No. 2 is scored for a string orchestra comprising just twenty players. The first performance took place at the concluding concert of the 2003 Mantta Music Festival, in Vilppula Church on 29th June. The soloist was Antti Siirala and the strings of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra were conducted by Osmo Vanska. The demanding piano writing is primarily a consequence of Siirala's remarkable command of the 'Beethovenian-Lisztian-Brahmsian' pianistic tradition. At times the piano part is lean and linear, but the work also contains multi-layered, full-toned piano textures and massive rolling octaves. The concerto requires great artistry on the part of the performer. The Second Piano Concerto lasts roughly half an hour and comprises three untitled movements played without a break. The first movement and the finale are extremely fast; these outer movements contain plenty of playful music. The slow second movement is more serious in tone, and its piano texture is very ample. The difficult cadenza at the end of the finale brings more serious emotions to the coda as well.

Daniel Csengery (b. 1974) wrote his three-movement Concertino in 2006. It is a colourful, carefree-sounding composition with lively rhythms, suitable for intermediate-level pianists and youth orchestras. The viola part may also be played by a third violin section. The music is available in two versions: 14606A - score and parts, 14606B reduction for two pianos.

The first drafts of the piano concerto in B flat major were already made in the spring of 1878 but the detailed elaboration of the composition followed only three years later. Its first public performance took place in Budapest on November 9th, 1881 in a concert of the Philharmonic Society. The orchestra was conducted by Sandor Erkel, the piano part was played by the composer.

The opening of the concerto is lyrical and meditative. The second movement, Adagio, drifts into a piano monologue that picks up speed. As the orchestra enters, the dialogue becomes aggressive. The finale begings with an energetic introduction, continues with blazing fanfares and textures.

Commissioned by Marta Ptaszynska for the 1992 Bydgoszcz Percussion Symposium in Poland, Dorff’s concerto bears a secret program reflecting the proud strength of Polish Solidarnosc standing up to Soviet oppression. Lurking in the drama’s background were the ironies of Poland’s financial dependence on the USSR, and Dorff’s ancestry with Russian and Polish roots. The first movement was completed in August 1991, and an hour later Gorbachev was deposed by a coup; the remainder of the concerto was composed as the USSR fell. This glorious development for human freedom also meant the end of financial commitments from the USSR to its satellite countries, leading to the cancellation of the Bydgoszcz Festival. Percussionist Dean Witten premiered the work with the Haddonfield (NJ) Symphony, conducted by Maestro Alan Gilbert, then in his 20s.
